Let’s face it. No one likes to clean. It’s gross, boring, tiring, and time-consuming. Even if you think you like to clean, would you rather spend your time scrubbing the toilet or lounging on the couch while watching your favorite show? We didn’t think so. If you want your household chores to be a breeze, here are the things that you need to get rid of:
1. Curtains and drapesh
Sure, curtains and drapes give the room a stylish look. But you know what else they do? Collect copious amounts of dust that can affect the air quality in your house. If you’re sick of laundering your window coverings every other month, opt for window shades that are way easier to clean than fabric materials.
2. Non-leather furniture
Furniture that is made from materials other than leather or vinyl is not only more challenging to clean, but they are easier to stain, too. If you have young children and pets, having furniture made from fabric is basically asking for a cleanup disaster.
3. Gaps behind the toilet
The space behind the toilet collects dust and grime that might not be cleaned for years or might not be cleaned at all since you can’t fit a rag between the toilet and the wall. So if you want to keep the area around your toilet clean, eliminate the space behind the toilet or leave enough space that makes it possible to clean that area.
4. Wall-to-wall carpeting
Having wall-to-wall carpeting in the home can be considered luxurious, but if you know just how much dirt and grime carpets collect, you might just want to remove them. Carpets are essentially breeding grounds for bacteria, and unless you vacuum and shampoo them regularly, this bacteria can cause health problems for you and your family. If you have pets, the health risks are even greater since they bring all sorts of germs from the outside with their paws.
5. Tapestries
Just like curtains and drapes, tapestries are notorious for collecting dust and other allergens. If you don’t want to add these wall coverings to your laundry pile, consider replacing them with different wall decorations that won’t be as hard to clean.
6. Excess clutter
Excessive amounts of stuff not only makes your house look and feel cramped, but it also makes it harder to clean. That said, getting rid of unnecessary clutter is a great way to make your house easier to clean, organize, and maintain. Apart from that, having less stuff in the home helps your mind feel more at ease and makes it easier to relax after a long day.
7. Old mops
When you clean with old, stinky mops, you might be making the floors dirtier rather than cleaning them. Learn to let go of old mops for the sake of cleaning your house effectively, not the other way around.
8. Huge mirrors
Mirrors can make a room feel brighter and roomier, but they also need regular cleaning. So instead of having three large mirrors in the room, why not cut that number down to only one or two?
9. Pop-up toaster
Not only is a pop-up toaster tricky to clean, but it also collects crumbs that make your kitchen attractive to all sorts of pests. Consider replacing your pop-up toaster with a toaster oven that’s easier to clean and has more functionality than a pop-up toaster.
10. Old mattresses
Most mattresses have a life span between 15 to 20 years, depending on the brand. If your mattress is already more than two decades old, it might be time to replace it. Otherwise, you could be laying in decades’ worth of dirt, dust, and bodily fluids: not exactly the thing you want to remember when you’re trying to fall asleep.
11. Ceiling fan
If you don’t use your ceiling fan often, consider getting rid of it to prevent the accumulation of dust on its blades, dust that will eventually travel around the room when you turn it on again.
12. Old grill
Replace your old grill with a non-stick variant that is easier to clean. Not only do non-stick grills make barbecues more fun, but they also reduce the risk of food-borne illness by making food residue easier to remove.
Making your house easier to clean is not that complicated. Sometimes, you need to get rid of certain things that make household chores more tedious than they need to be, starting with the ones mentioned above.
